BMW R18 Roctane
The BMW R18 Roctane is the fifth – and last born – of the R18 family: matter of fact, it came to complete a line-up composed by the R18, R18 Classic, R18 B and the R18 Transcontinental. Let’s see it together.
R18 Roctane: iconic style
The R18 is a line-up that celebrates the history and tradition of the german brand, blending a vintage style to the very best that 21st century technology can offer. More specifically, the BMW R18 Roctane is a custom bagger strongly inspired by the BMW R5, with stylistic elements that resemble iconic boxer models that the german manufacturer use to build in 1936: the frame, the teardrop fuel tank, the cardane at view, and the double line finish on the tank (available as optional). A lot of elements are tight to BMW tradition: the front fender, the rear fender and the headlight shell made of metal, and the swingarm with embedded cardane that make the motorcycle look like a rigid frame. Icing on the cake: the “Berlin Made” writing on the headlight and on the instruments.
At the center of the project there is the beating heart of this BMW R18 Roctane: the 1802cm³ motor in metallic Avis black and polished black covers: a blast of beauty capable of delivering 67k2(91HP) of power at 4750 rpm and a torque that is always above 150nm the 2000 rpm to 4000rpm range.
The suspensions are in line with what the competition is offering at the moment: we can find a 49mm fork in the front and, in the back, a single shock that offers preload regulations. The rims are in aluminum and are equipped with 120/17 B 21 tires in the front and 180/55 B 18 in the back; the braking compartment sports 3 rotors controlled by 4-pistons calipers.
Well hidden to the eye of who looks at the BMW R18 Roctane, the electronic features are pretty good for this model. The rider can choose between 3 maps: Rock, Roll and Rain; plus, the stability control and the engine break control are standard. As optional it is possible to choose the Hill Start Control and the reverse gear. Interesting features also are the adaptive LED adaptive headlights and the Keyless Ride.
Our thoughts on the R18 Roctane
The BMW R 18 Roctane is positioned in the same segment as the Harley Davidson Road King and of the Indian Motorcycle Spingfield Dark Horse, offering a very competitive package. We like it very much but, to tell you more, we need to test ride it. For now, we will just say that, on paper, it looks like it has everything to compete against the rivals in its category.
