Indian Springfield: let’s discover it together
Indian Springfield models hit the market in 2016 and carried over to the 2022 model year with only adjustments, and a couple of changes to the color palette. The package includes the reliable 116 Thunderstroke, ABS, and keyless ignition. But it’s the classic, old-school bagger look that brings sales in for this motorcycle. Plus, it’s among the least expensive of the available baggers, which is always great.
Enough with the talking, let’s dive into its pecs.
Performances
All Indian Springfield models are equipped with the reliable Thunder Stroke 116. The motor delivers 171nm of torque that tops out at a low 3,000 rpm. Indian gives you complete control over that power with 3 selectable riding profiles: Sport, Standard and Rain.
The electronic witchcraft is completed by Rear Cylinder Deactivation, which kills the rear cylinder when idling at a stop to reduce the heat wash from the engine.
It is safe to say that the Indian Springfield is equipped with a thoroughly modern engine, but the company decided to go the extra mile to make it look like something much older. Nothing to argue about, this engine looks incredible and perfectly fits with the motorcycle vintage style.
To top it all off: a standard clutch couples engine power to the six-speed transmission with a belt final drive to carry it to the rear wheel. All this together allows the Springfield to reach a top speed of about 110 mph.
Design
The Indian Springfield delivers a healthy dose of nostalgia. The fender leads the way with a chrome brow and iconic, lighted war-bonnet crest. Chrome fork skirts beef up the stems, headlight nacelle and whisker bar, and a pair of lamps coupled with the front turn signals wrap up the forward lighting.
Like every early American tourbikes, the Springfield rocks a large, quick-release windshield.
A chrome instrument panel rides on the 5.5-gallon fuel tank with the on/off button, a round fuel gauge, and large analog gauge for the speeddometer. A host of indicator lights are set in the face of the speedo, and there’s a small LED screen to handle the remaining metrics and act as an interface for the 3 Riding scenarios.
A deep-scoop seat pulls you down into the motorcycle and pullback along with forward footboards allow to enjoy every ride in a relaxed position. The pillion perch comes paired with fold-up footboards of its own to pamper your passenger. Hard bags are paint-matched and feature a remote-locking feature.
The Indian Springfield rear fender is equipped with LED taillight give a touch of modernity to the whole package. After all, this motorcycle is a perfect mix of modernity and vintage style.
Things are a bit different for the Springfield Dark Horse: chrome is noticeably absent and the mini-ape bars add to its sinister, boulevard bruiser attitude.
Chassis
The Indian Springfield has a cast-aluminum frame. While that undoubtedly removes some weight, it still tips the scales at 835 pounds wet. It is not exactly competing to be a light motorcycle.
Rake and trail measure in at 25-degrees and 5.2-inches respectively for good tracking with a maximum lean angle of 31 degrees to each side. That should be enough to give you the opportunity to have a little fun on bendy roads.
Cast-aluminum, 16-inch wheels come set up to network with the stock tire pressure-monitoring system. A super cool feature that shows how advanced this motorcycle really is, but a set of laced wheels would have looked better.
The Indian Springfield has ABS standard on all color configurations. The braking system is composed of 300 mm discs work with dual, four-pistons calipers to deliver about 70 percent of the total stopping power. The two-piston caliper in the rear mainly helps to keep the rear end where it belongs, behind you.
Suspensions on the Indian Springfield are not bad either: the 46 mm forks come with fixed damping values, while the monoshock in the back has air-adjustable preload for a cushy ride and stepless adjustment.
Our opinion
The motorcycle is not bad at all. It is perfect for who looks for a reliable and versatile motorcycle: it is perfect for either short or long rides, you can also hit the grocery store with it. It can be easily used every day.
