Indian® Motorcycle: the first american motorcycle company
Everyone knows Indian® history. Established in 1901, closes in 1953 and comes back to life in 1953 under the name Indian Motorcycle Company®.
With more tha 100 years of history, it is the first American motorcycle company and once was the biggest motorcycle company in the world.
Founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, Indian has always been in tons of motorcycle enthusiasts’ dreams. In 1902, the co-founder Oscar Hedström established the speed world’s record. 56mph.
The growth of the company starts in that very moment: production
grows from the 500 units of 1904 to more than 32.000 units sold in 1913; numbers that crowned Indian as the main motorcycle factory in the United States. Over time, the production of bags for Indian Motorcycle®, sought after all over the world, also begins.
Among their most famous models there is the Scout that was built until World War Two, and the Chief produced from 1922 to 1953.
