Indian FTR: from the flat-track to the streets

In the world of motorcycles, few names resonate with as much history and heritage as Indian Motorcycle. Renowned for its iconic designs and a legacy that spans over a century, Indian Motorcycle has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation. One of its modern gems, the Indian FTR, stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to performance, style, and a nod to its racing roots. This article explores the captivating history and evolution of the Indian FTR.

Birth of the Indian FTR 750:

The roots of the FTR series can be traced back to the development of the FTR750, a purpose-built flat track racing motorcycle. In 2016, Indian Motorcycle set out to reclaim its dominance in American Flat Track racing, and the FTR750 was the machine chosen for the task. The bike’s debut season in 2017 saw an impressive performance, with Indian Motorcycle securing the Manufacturer’s Championship in its first year.

Unveiling the Indian FTR 1200 Concept:

Building on the success of the FTR750, Indian Motorcycle decided to bring the flat track spirit to the streets. In 2017, the company unveiled the FTR1200 Concept at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. The concept bike took the motorcycling community by storm, blending the aggressive styling of a flat tracker with the practicalities of a road-going motorcycle.

The overwhelmingly positive response to the FTR1200 Concept paved the way for Indian Motorcycle to turn the dream into a reality. In 2019, the production version of the FTR1200 was officially launched. True to its flat track roots, the FTR1200 retained the distinctive, muscular design while incorporating modern features and advanced technology.

Key Features:

1. **Powerful Engine:** The FTR1200 is powered by a liquid-cooled, 1203cc V-twin engine that delivers a potent mix of power and torque, providing an exhilarating riding experience.

2. **Performance Chassis:** With a sporty chassis and fully adjustable suspension, the FTR1200 is designed to handle corners with precision and provide a comfortable ride.

3. **Technology Integration:** The FTR1200 incorporates advanced technology, including a customizable 4.3-inch touchscreen display, ride modes, traction control, and ABS, bringing a modern touch to the classic flat track styling.

4. **Flat Track Heritage:** While designed for the street, the FTR1200 pays homage to its flat track roots with its aggressive stance, exposed components, and signature exhaust.

Expanding the Lineup:

In subsequent years, Indian Motorcycle expanded the FTR lineup to cater to a broader range of riders. The FTR Rally introduced a more rugged, off-road-inspired variant, while the FTR Carbon elevated the premium aspect with carbon fiber bodywork and exclusive features. Today, the FTR line-up features 5 models, including the all new FTR R Carbon 100%.

Our thoughts on the Indian FTR:

From the thundering tracks of American Flat Track racing to the urban streets, the Indian FTR has carved a niche for itself, embodying the spirit of a legendary brand. Its journey from the dirt ovals to the production line showcases Indian Motorcycle’s commitment to pushing boundaries and creating motorcycles that not only perform but also pay homage to a rich racing heritage.
